Donald E. Casey

Dr. Casey is nationally renowned as an expert, leader, lecturer and widely published author on quality and safety of patient care. He is a Certified Physician Executive of the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and of the American Heart Association (AHA) and Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Medical Quality (ACMQ).

 

Dr. Casey has participated in developing and implementing numerous clinical practice guidelines and quality performance measures through the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Quality Forum (NQF), The Joint Commission, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, state health departments among others.  He also served as President of the Board of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the American Heart Association from 2009 to 2013. 

 

He has served as an advisor, consultant and participant on many national initiatives, including longstanding Chair of the NQF Care Coordination Steering Committee from 2006 to date in 2014. Dr. Casey has published more than 75 peer-reviewed journal articles (14 citations in 2013 and 2 in 2014 Year to Date) and book chapters, including his most recent invited commentary on September 23, 2013 in JAMA Internal Medicine, titled: Commentary, Why Don’t Physicians (and Patients) Consistently Follow Clinical Practice Guidelines? His works throughout the years have also been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Journal of Cardiac Failure, the American Journal of Medical Quality (AJMQ), Academic Medicine, Inquiry, Hepatology and Neurology. He is an active member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Medical Quality (AJMQ) and frequently serves as an active peer review for AJMQ, JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Academic Medicine and Inquiry.

 

A highly sought after speaker, Dr. Casey lectures nationwide on health policy issues, physician leadership and on new strategies to improve patient care through effective care coordination, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, patient-centered outcomes and quality performance measurements.

Dr. Don Casey is currently Principal and Founder of IPO4Health, located in Chicago, which provides expertise, experience and advice for accountable care and clinical integration via value-based contracting; clinical practice guideline and performance measurement development and implementation; quality outcomes measurement and improvement; physician leadership and accountability; population health management for chronic illnesses, including advanced care planning; federal agencies and non-governmental organizations (e.g. CMS, NQF); expert witness services for medical malpractice corporate negligence and antitrust; and survey readiness for standards-setting bodies (e.g. Joint Commission, ACGME, NCQA).

 

Prior to IPO4Health, Dr. Casey served the NYU Langone Medical Center in 2012 as Vice President of Network Integration and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the NYUPN Clinically Integrated Physician Network until December, 2013.  His achievements included the development and implementation of successful performance measurement and improvement management systems for quality of care, patient experience and efficiency for the more than 1,600 physicians participating in NYUPN’s current and future performance-based “Pay for Value” contracts with commercial and government payers.

This work resulted in the adoption of more than 100 recommendations of the ABIM Foundation’s “Choosing Wisely” campaign for many NYU medical specialties. As Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Department of Population Health of the NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Casey delivered numerous presentations and lectures nationally and to NYU physicians, residents and medical students on quality and healthcare reform, and was one of four principal investigators in the “Accelerating Change in Medical Education” grant recently awarded to the School of Medicine by the American Medical Association. He was also appointed to the New York State Department of Health and Patient Safety External Advisory Committee.

 

From 2005 to 2012, Dr. Casey served as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Officer, Chief Academic Officer and Chief Research Officer for Atlantic Health System (AHS) in New Jersey, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical School. During his tenure, AHS hospitals experienced a more than 40% decline in inpatient mortality and a 25% decline in infection rates, with significant hospital ranking improvement in the University Health System Consortium Comparative Database and in US News and World Report. He also founded the Atlantic Center for Research and achieved national recognition from the AAMC for AHS’s residency quality improvement efforts.

 

Dr. Casey also served as Senior Vice President and CMO for Catholic Healthcare Partners (CHP), a 5- state, 30-hospital health system based in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he created and implemented a comprehensive “best practice” driven quality strategic plan that achieved top decile performance and national recognition for the CHP hospitals. Between 2001 and 2005, he successfully designed and implemented CHP’s AHRQ-funded Heart Failure GAP (Guidelines Applied in Practice) initiative, resulting in a 5% readmission rate and a 40% decline in inpatient mortality, through improved evidence-based care of patients with chronic heart failure. Dr. Casey revolutionized the first large scale regional population-based quality improvement initiatives, claims data analytics and transparency as Senior Vice President and CMO of the Delmarva Foundation (Maryland and Washington D.C.’s Medicare Quality Improvement Organization) from 1997-2001. This work resulted in the first statewide reporting of health care quality measures in Maryland in 1999.

 

A board-certified primary care internist who has practiced primary care and hospital/critical care medicine in a variety of clinical settings for 19 years, Dr. Casey earned his AB degree from Dartmouth College, MD degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, an MPH from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (Biostatistics and Health Policy), and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (Entrepreneurship and Quantitative Finance).
